The Boston Phoenix says, “Sam Hooper has developed his own breed of blues, blending the signatures of driving soul and funk with tight, focused chops-intensive musicianship.”
WERS radio 88.9FM says, “(Hooper) is easily one of the most versatile performers this city has to offer, sneaking below the radar, yet blasting above the competition in terms of pure musicianship.”
Sam Hooper has performed at the original House of Blues in Cambridge MA, and a number of festivals including the W. C. Handy Music Festival in Florence, AL and the Soul of the Blues Festival in New York City. His music has also been featured on radio and television. NEWS - JULY 2006: SHG RETURNS TO THE LIZARD LOUNGE AUGUST 1ST! SH: guitar/voc, Jordan Scannella: bass/vox, and featuring the return of Akira Nakamura on drums! Since Akira moved to LA a couple of years ago, we've only been able to play with him when we're all in China. He's just moved to NYC so you should have more opportunities to see our Shanghai lineup. ** Our friends Todd and Mike, who played with us at the Lizard last year, started their new project, Choose to Find, while we were in China. They've been quickly gaining lots of new fans and we're pleased to have them open for us. It also means the night will be ripe for some good jamming later on!! ----------
NEWS - APRIL 2006: Patrick Van de Sande, CEO of PVS Electronics in Belgium, was impressed when he saw us perform at the House of Blues & Jazz in Shanghai. He was so impressed that he asked me to endorse his Procab high-end audio cables!! They are awesome cables and I'm happy to make them a regular part of our stage and studio setup. NEWS - MARCH 2006: We just finished playing 6 nights/week for 5 months in China!! Shanghai was a blast, as usual and our fan base there is growing like wildfire. House of Blues & Jazz was so packed for our goodbye party that they had to turn people away....and we played until 5:00 in the morning!!! Many thanks to all the wonderful musicians from around the world who played with us that night. We had SO MUCH FUN! LISTEN to this internet radio program with live clips of us playing at the House of Blues & Jazz in Shanghai! http://dreadfulsnake.libsyn.com/ ----------
NEWS - AUGUST 2005: In July we flew to China for a whirlwind 5 days of gigs and mayhem! We went especially to play for our good Scottish friend, Gordon Stevenson's goodbye party. He was leaving his log-term position as VP at Philips Lighting's Asian division and flying to Manila to head up another company. Akira, Jordan, our friend Todd Marston on keyboards and I were very grateful to be included in the celebration, which also included a band from the Philippines, a traditional Chinese dance troupe and a hot group of Chinese hip-hop dancers. It was all caught on video, so we should get a DVD of it soon. While in Shanghai, we also did a club gig at Malone's and packed their new 3rd floor! It was great to see old friends and make many new ones. Akira has moved to LA, so it was so much fun to play with him again. It was fun to add Todd's keyboards to the funky chemistry of our trio and the crowd finally let themselves heat up the dance floor too. Sitting in with our friends at the Cotton Club and chillin' at the new jazz digs of JZ, shopping with minimal Mandarin, showing Todd the culture of Chinese massage and jamming at our home-away-from-home, The House of Blues & Jazz, it was a great trip!! It was SO good that YES, we will be returning to play at The House of Blues & Jazz in Shanghai for 6 nights/week from Tues. 9/27 through 12/25, Christmas Day! So book your flights now and come hang with us!! Haven't you been wanting to come to China anyway? The recent covers of Time and Newsweek have confirmed that this is the China Century, so come join us to celebrate and rock the place with music! Also, I have to mention last week's fabulously fun show at the Crane Estate in Ipswich. There were about 1500 people there of all ages hanging out with us on their huge lawn. The view out over the crowd over the rolling hill into the ocean was just breathtaking! The most fun was when all the little kids came right up and sat on the stairs in front of us during the second set. They were just so into it!! Jordan (bass) was surrounded by a crowd of young admirers after the show who were competing to get a word in edgewise. Mike Daillak (drums) and my sister Paula (flute) were also hits with the crowd. It was just a beautiful summer evening for music. Thanks to my friend Ann for helping manage the lines that had gathered to buy CDs and get autographs. Many thanks to Ramona Latham for being a friend in many ways and helping make it happen. Please see here for tours at the Crane Estate. We hope to see you before we fly to China. Peace and God Bless, Sam ----------

MAY 2002 - Greetings and Happy Spring!
I'm excited and thankful that this year my music is being played nationally on network television for the first time!
"I Won't Be Your Fool" from my CD, All Caught Up, has been played on the soap opera "All My Children" once and on two episodes of "The Young and the Restless" (TV's #1 daytime drama.) The ballad, "Help Me Out of the Dark," also from All Caught Up, was played on "The Young and the Restless," on Thursday, April 11.
On the live tip, my sister Paula and I had a fabulous time playing our debut gig at Davis Square's Irish hot spot, The Burren, on March 24. Host Danielle Miraglia made us feel right at home and played some fun tunes. My California buddy and bassist extraordinaire, Seth Horán, played a dynamic set. At the end of the night, we jammed out on some Hendrix, Stevie Ray and Sly Stone!
Peace, Sam |
